In other words, it won't idle. Lots of possibilities in the fuel or ignition system. Take it to a shop and get them to read the error codes.
It was a mid-1960's Volkswagen Beetle. In all probability it was several Beetles, possibly of varying years (Beetles change almost imperceptibly from year to year).
backfiring is almost always a symptom of timing. having someone check timing of car better do it quickly can burn valves and cause all kinds of problems. Gary
