I BELIEVE it is underneath the battery tray ( I was thinking that by using a mirror and a flashlight and pulling down the rubber inner fender liner on the drivers front wheel , a person could look in that area to be sure )

Most likely it's the pads knocking because the rotors need to be machined or replaced. Alternatively, if you have rear drum brakes, an abnormality in the drums could cause the shoes to jump up and down vertically.
