Auguries read from the viscera of sacrificed animals, were commonly consulted in instances of large or important undertakings.

People would seek out information about when to open a new business, marriage, or in some cases the gender of a child.

These people tended to be more affluent as the sacrifice of an animal was expensive and part of the payment for the reading was the body (meat) from the animal, which became property of the priests.

Political leaders would also seek this kind of information when contemplating war, or if some kind of large issue was influencing their kingdom. For example: plagues, famine, floods, or droughts.

The sacrifice of the animal was in part to placate the gods and to allow the priests to read the entails.
