Roman men wore off white clothes which were the colour of the undyed wool they were made of. The presence of other colours denoted status or special occasions. The basic male clothing was the tunic. Men of equestrian status (the second highest social order) wore the tunica augusticlavia, which had narrow stripes from shoulders to the lower hem in a colour the Romans called purple, but was more like a deep crimson. Senators wore the tunica laticlavia, which had two broad stripes

Male Roman citizens also wore the toga virilis. It had the off-white colour of undyed wool. The toga praetexta was an off-white toga with a purple border worn by the officers of state and the senators. The toga candida was an artificially whitened toga worn by candidates for political office. The toga pulla was dark and was worn for mourning. The toga picta was purple and embroidered with gold thread which was worn by victorious commanders in triumphal parades. The toga purpura was purple and was worn by emperors in ceremonial occasions.

There were fewer restrictions on the dresses of women. They could be almost of any colour. Women wore a sleeveless or sleeved tunic, a stola (a female equivalent of the toga which was for married women) and a cloak (palla). The stola was often made of undyed wool and therefore off-white, but could also be coloured. The tunics could be brightly coloured and made of lightweight fabrics such as linen or silk. A wide ornamental border (instita) on the lower hem of a white tunic or stola was a marker of wealth.

What is so stylish about clothing?

Clothing might be just what you put on to cover up, but to some people clothing is everything. Clothing contributes to who they are and what "class" there most likely to be in. Even if you do have the clothes, some people will still reject you because you don't have the "look." Most people when they want people to except them in a clique will go to extreme linghts to fit in like, going on a diet or wearing holister or abercombie clothing everyday, which isn't necessary.

What caused clothing or hair style fads?

Clothing and Hair Style fads are determined by the runways. The stylists will put a certain print or detail on a piece of clothing and put it down the runway and another designer all copy it and put it down their runway and so on and so forth. Until the idea gets picked up by Common Shopping Stores and people begin to wear it and others begin to wear it then its a fad because a lot of people wear it. Hope this helps
