The 54 nations of the Commonwealth were all previously members of the British Empire and are now independent countries. They include Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, India, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa etc. A minority have chosen to retain Queen Elizabeth II as their Head of State.
