I have heard that in some countries of the world people are indeed selling their organs. If this is done legally or not I do not know.
I also hear tails of people being 'mugged' and waking up with an organ missing. This may be apocryphal but it could happen.
I feel that is it quite OK for a person to give an organ to someone (provided they understand what they are doing and know the risks). However, I believe that there should be no 'profit' involved in this. Introducing profit will cause vulnerable people to be pressured into making a buck and I think that this is wrong in medical matters.
I also feel that it is quite OK for people to donate organs in the event of their death. However, this too needs strict policing as, like with Birk and Hare, if there is money to be made the living could be bumped off to supply.

Can't sell organs. It's illegal. The National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA), a federal law, makes it illegal to buy or sell organs for profit. You can be sentenced to five years in prison or a $50,000 fine, or both.

Trafficking in human organs is illegal in the US and much of Europe. There are some places where it is allowed.
