After World War II, American forces occupied the southern part of the Korean peninsula. Soviet forces occupied the northern part, which was closer to Russia. The northern part of Korea adopted communism beliefs and became the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The southern part of Korea became the capitalist Republic of Korea (South Korea).
