A mortar is a cannon with a short barrel that fires shells in a high, arcing path. This allows the shells to travel over obstacles to hit a target. They were used in trench warfare, where they could be fired from inside a trench.
All of the major combatants. however the really hefty examples were the German 420 MM mortar, and similar pieces by Skoda in the Austro-Hungarian empire. a 320 MM Skoda mortar , incredible as it sounds- was DROP_FIRED- probably by a crew of loaders who all let go at once- not for me! In a very real sense mortar projectiles are a form and forerunner of military rockets- as are used right now in the Gaza campaign. There is no problem with spent shells as the whole projectile goes out the muzzle= wham!
