There have technically been three English Civil Wars, between the Royalists and Parliamentarians the first between 1642-1646, the second 1648-1649 and the third 1649-1651, usually known collectively as the English Civil War (1642-1651).

As for where, there were numerous battles throughout England and parts of Wales.

Some key battles include, Edgehill (23rd October 1642), First and Second Battles of Newbury (20th September1643) and (27th October 1644) respectively, Marston Moor (2nd July 1644), The Battle of Naseby (14th June 1645), in Wales one of the most well known battles is the Battle of Saint Fagans (8 May 1648).

The first and second Civil Wars led to the trial and execution of the monarch, King Charles I (the first) and the establishment of a republican Commonwealth of England. Charles II (the second) would later regain the throne and re-establish the Monarchy as part of a period called The Restoration (from 1660). Although the Monarchy was restored, the sovereignty of Parliament had been confirmed.

The English Civil War occurred in England and Scotland. It started in Scotland when a Presbyterian pastor was forced to read his prayers from the English Book of Common Prayer. The war spread from Scotland to England. Landowners with great estates dependent on farming generally supported the king. Capitalists with interests in shipping and manufacturing generally supported the Puritans. In England the Puritans and the Capitalists won the war. (In France, the Monarchy killed or threw out the Puritans and Capitalists on St. Bartholomew's Day nearly 70 years earlier).

The clue is in the wording "civil war".

It was an internecine conflict, involving only English (British) factions.

There were actually three "English Civil Wars" - 1642-46, 1648-49 and 1649-51, although other wars were also civil, for example the Revolt of 1173-74, the Despenser War against Edward II, the Wars of the Roses, the Monmouth Rebellion... etc.

How did the American Civil War differ from the Revolutionary War?

The main difference between the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War was that the Revolutionary War was fought between the British Empire and the American Colonies, the latter of which declared independence; and the "Civil War" was fought between the United States, and the Confederated States of America--two separate and distinct countries. So, in actuality, the "Civil War" was not a civil war, since it was a war between to countries.
