A Protestant Wind
Correct me if I'm wrong, but while en route to fight a growing English fleet the "proud and mighty" Spanish Armada was mostly destroyed by a huge storm. This prompted the English Navy to rise into prominence and spurred the Spanish Empire's decline over the next few centuries.
The English sea dogs had smaller faster ships than those belonging to the Spanish Armada. They were able to maneuver them into better positions. Also, the English guns could fire from a longer distance. The sea dogs were also close enough to home ports, they could go back and restock their gunpowder and cannonballs. The Spanish Armada and the crew were already suffering from bad storms and countless deaths from diseases.
The English navy defeated the Spanish Armada because their ships were smaller and lighter than Spain's heavy galleons. The English's navy darted around the Armada firing cannon after cannon until the Spanish finnally gave up and headed home. On their way home, however, a massive storm hit them and less than half of the fleet made it home alive.
