France. The name is locational in origin, referring to either Saint Paul-du-Vernai in Calvados or the Vernai parish in Arrondissenient of Bayeaux. The spelling was probably adopted in England, the earliest use of the name being of one Robert de Vernai in 1212 but the spelling had become Varney by the time Sir Ralph Varney became an adviser to Queen Elizabeth I in the late Sixteenth Century. (The name was undoubtedly selected for the notorious 1840s Horror novel Varney the Vampire for allitteration and euphony.)
