As with all surnames starting with "Mc" or "Mac", this name comes from Scotland. It literally means "son of Pherson". One famous member of the MacPherson family (or clan if you will) is James MacPherson (1736-1796) who wrote three books which he claimed were translations of Irish and Scottish folklore stories and poems, but were in fact creations of his own imagination, inspired by the Celtic history of Ireland and Brittain.
