because if a fleet was damaged in the Pacific Ocean then we have our military bases back then were on the west side of north america, so then with out it they would have to go all the way at the bottom om sout america, makeing it extremly dangerouse, and took a way longer time.

∙ 12y agoWe did! We did employ Panamanians to help with the construction, and owned the canal directly until the middle of the 1990's, when it was turned back over to the nation of Panama.
