You are just as likely to see bison in Canada as the United States, simply because their historic range expanded north into Canada (as far north as the Yukon and Northwest Territories), and as far south as Texas. Yellowstone National Park in the USA is very famous for its large bison herd, however you are also very likely to see bison in Elk Island National Park of Alberta, Canada, and Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan, Canada. Wood Buffalo National Park of the northeastern corner of Alberta is also home to the largest herd of wood bison (different species from the Plains Bison) in the world.
Many private ranches in Canada and the USA also have bison herds, however many of these domesticated bison are not of the pure bison strain. These bison have been interbred with domestic cattle to make them more tamer, and breeding programs have made these bison more like bison than cattle, though the docility genetics have been bred into them and expanded on to make these animals easier to handle than their wilder, pure-bred brethren.
The European bison (or wisent) is a vulnerable species that is most common in Eastern Europe. There are few that exist in the wild to this day, the majority of them being in western Belarus. Thanks to successful reintroduction, European bison are being spread throghout their home continent, with wild bison roaming in most Eastern European countries, as well as Spain.Poland
They are remembered as a plains animal because most movies show the Plains Bison, or bison bison.
Bison are types of large ungulates that belong to the Bovinae subfamily and fall under the Artiodactyla order. The most recent relatives to the bison are the American and European bison.

The bison family had been around for millions of years in Africa and Asia, and crossed the Bering strait into North America as the Steppe Bison perhaps between half a million and a million years ago. The steppe bison evolved to be the American bison that you see, today. Related bison of the steppe bison also evolved in Africa/Europe/Asia to become water buffaloes, African buffaloes, cattle, and yaks.
