I called Joyva (the makers of Halvah) directly and asked if it needed to be refrigerated. They said no it did not but it was better if you did. They also went on to say that their Halvah can last up to a year unopened and six months opened. I asked them how one would know when the Halvah was made. The woman on the phone said that there is a code on the product (it is etched in the plastic on the 8oz bags), the last number represents the year it was manufactured, the numbers before it represent the day it was made ie., 1129 = 112th day of 2009.
