After the failure of the French at Dien Bien Phu, America aided the South Vietnamese government by sending military advisers, usually Green Berets, to show the army how to train in order to defeat the Viet Cong guerrilla insurgency, but with the Tonkin Gulf Incident, LBJ received congressional permission to escalate the war by sending regular troops to fight the Army of the People's Republic (North Vietnam) infiltrating along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
