As part of a state-sponsored expedition, Spain (technically, then a personal union between the Kingdoms of Castille and Aragon) was the first European nation to reach the North American continent, having financially backed the Genoese explorer, Christopher Columbus, in 1492.
The Norse, however, are believed to be the first people from Europe to reach North America (disregarding the origins of the indigenous Native Americans), having colonized Greenland as early as 986. Although hardly a unified "country", the Norsemen also began exploring around present-day Newfoundland.
