Approximately 1,000 Australian troops participated in the Boxer Rebellion, which took place in China between 1899 and 1901. These troops were primarily drawn from the colonial forces of Australia and served as part of a larger international military coalition aimed at suppressing the Boxer uprising. Australia's involvement marked one of its early contributions to international military operations.
Australian forces fought in all theaters of WWII. The fact that the Pacific was their home turf simply made it more convenient to retain their units in that theater. == In the early stages of the War many Australian units fought in North Africa, but after the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in February 1942, the Australian government brought most of these troops home and cooperated closely with the US.
Australian & other British Commonwealth troops, aircraft & ships were sent to Singapore to defend it from the Japanese in December 1941. Singapore was the most important British naval base in Asia. When the Japanese captured Singapore, many Australians were taken prisoner. At the time that Singapore was being attacked by the Japanese, the Australian government was very strongly trying to resist British pressure to send more reinforcements into Singapore. The Australians correctly estimated that Singapore would fall regardless of the efforts that could be mounted to save it. In fact many Australian troops arrived just prior to the British surrender, and never got a chance to fight, but instead spent the rest of the war (or their lives) in Japanese POW (mini-death) camps in South-east Asia. This caused alot of friction between the Australian and British governments. The Australian government had its troops in North Africa fighting Rommel's Afrika Corps, and some defending SE Asia. It was short of troops for Australian Home Defense. Because of this in early 1942, the responsibility for the defense of Australia would be shifted from the British Command to the United States Commanders in the South Pacific. The United States sent large numbers of troops to Australia to reinforce local Australian troops.
The UK has 187,210 regular troops and 145,000 reserve troops as of early 2009.
In Spring 1945 the Netherlands were in a desperate state. Early on in the war, the Netherlands had been victim to Luftwaffa air strikes. They were occupied but troops that were cut off from supplies. These supplies were needed to keep the German troops in a fighting state. The Allies started air dropping supplies like clothes and Food to the civilians and this continued until the armistice was signed on 11th May 1945. An interesting note that in both world wars no allied troops fought in the north of the country.
There was no Australian Dollar until 1966, long after the "early settlement". At the time of currency changeover from Pounds to Dollars, the Australian One Pound note converted to the Australian Two Dollar note.
