Bethel School District v. Fraser, (1986), the earlier case, established that schools may prohibit lewd and vulgar language at student assemblies, even if the speech does not create a disruption.

Frederick, (2007) extended school officials' ability to discipline students for violating school speech policies when the Court held a high school principle had not violated a student's civil rights by suspending him for displaying a "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner off school property when students gathered to watch the Olympic torch pass through town.
