The most logical explanation seems to be that the moon and earth were once attached, and that the moon emerged from what is now called the ring of fire. The resulting rupture would have divided Pangea and created the mid-Atlantic ridge. This tearing process appears to have begun in what is now Iceland and then continued towards both the north and south, forming the continents slowly as it went. Notice that the mid-Atlantic ridge, as it passes beneath Iceland, suddenly changes direction and shifts towards the west, which accounts for the greater landmass of the vast Eurasian plate when compared to its North American counterpart. Under ideal circumstances the smaller moon would have divided Pangea equally, so it's safe to conclude that some external event, a collision with a comet, for example, knocked the emerging moon off its ideal exit path. This would account for the sudden shift in the ring of fire towards the southwest, as well. In other words, this external collision event would be registered on opposite sides of the earth, and would account for both the greater landmass of the Eurasian plate as well as the radical change in direction in the ring of fire.
