John Brown was a abolitionist who fought for emancipation of slaves in the United States prior to the Civil War. In the pursuit of this goal, he assaulted and killed many people. In an attempt to start a slave revolt, he briefly occupied an armory in Harper's Ferry Virginia. He was captured by a US Marines detachment and eventually hung.
