What criteria determine the seriousness of battery?

The actual act, meaning how bad the person was hurt. Then there is intent, or weather the perpetrator was trying to hurt the victim. If it is done with intent to kill or with a dangerous weapon it is aggravated battery, and the sentence can be greater.
