No one knows my namestake like I do (except Crystallography majors) and in reality obsidian is not quite classified as a type of crystal at all, as its composition is too complex to comprise a single mineral, it's usually just considered a mineraloid.

Obsidian is actually volcanic glass and not a mineral. It does not have a crystalline structure, which is one of the requirements for mineral classification.

What is obsidian's cleavage?

Obsidian does not have cleavage because of the way it forms. Obsidian is essentially nature's form of glass and so it has no regular or patterned crystal structure. Without that crystal structure, there is no cleavage.

What rock group does obsidan belong to?

Obsidian falls under the group of Extrusive Volcanic Rock of very fine texture. Obsidian is generally called Volcanic Glass.

Is obsidian manmade?

Obsidian is not an artificial stone. Obsidian is a naturally formed gemstone. It is formed by the sudden cooling of magma after the eruption from the back mountain pass and the extremely low temperature around it. As one of the common gemstones in life, obsidian is usually made into various accessories to wear, such as obsidian pendants, obsidian bracelets and other accessories. But in addition, because of the extremely sharp nature of the fractured part of obsidian, obsidian is currently used to make surgical blades as well. What kind of igneous rock is obsidian?

Obsidian is an igneous rock. However it differs from other rocks because it contains no minerals. It consists of natural glass, which is not a mineral because it has no crystal structure.Answers from McDougal Littell, Earth Science book

What minerals are obsidian made up of?

There are no minerals in obsidian. Obsidian is a silica-rich volcanic glass, which cools too quickly to produce crystals. A mineral must have an ordered atomic structure and a distinct chemical composition. The size of a crystal depends on cooling rate of the magma: slower cooling correlates to larger crystal size. If a magma cools too quickly, the elements don't have time to organize themselves into crystals, and will "freeze" in place as a glass. Obsidian often has a chemical composition similar to a granite, meaning that the ratios of different elements and oxides would be the same. The major difference between these two rocks is cooling rate--granite cools slowly, deep underground, while obsidian cools quickly on the surface.

Is obsidian rock or gemstone?

Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock. Volcanic in origin, it is very common in recent lava flows. Obsidian is primarily made of glass. Obsidian is amorphous, lacking any crystal structure found in gemstones. For more details, try asking the question - "What is obsidian"

How much inches high wide and deep is obsidian?

Obsidian is a naturally occurring glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. It is produced when acidic lava, extruded from a volcano cools very rapidly, freezing without sufficient time for crystal growth.Obsidian is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, where cooling of the lava is rapid.Because of the lack of crystal structure, obsidian blade edges can reach almost molecular thinness, leading to its ancient use as stone age knives and arrowheads, and its modern use as surgical scalpel blades.Obsidian can be found as lumps of rock of any size up to and including an entire mountainside.Obsidian has several varieties. Obsidian can contain small bubbles of air that are aligned along layers created as the molten rock was flowing just before being cooled. These bubbles can produce interesting effects such as a golden sheen, known as Sheen Obsidian or a rainbow sheen called Rainbow Obsidian. Inclusions of small, white, radially clustered crystals of cristobalite in the black glass produce a blotchy or snowflake pattern producing Snowflake Obsidian. Small nuggets of obsidian that have been naturally rounded and smoothed by wind and water are called Apache Tears.Often confused with smoky quartz, obsidian has similar properties to quartz because of a similar chemistry. However, many properties dependant on a crystal structure are altered or absent in obsidian because it lacks any crystal structure of its own. The piezoelectric and optical properties in quartz are thus absent in obsidian. Smoky quartz usually has a splotchy or zoned distribution to its color while Obsidian's color is more uniformly distributed.

Are there igneous rocks that lack a crystal structure?

Obsidian, actually a volcanic glass, has no crystalline structure due to its quick solidification.
