The Medes and the Babylonians conquered Assyria
The territory of the ancient Assyrian Empire primarily overlaps with parts of several modern nations, including Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. The heartland of the empire was concentrated in northern Iraq, particularly around the cities of Nineveh and Ashur. Additionally, regions in southeastern Turkey and northwestern Iran also encompassed areas that were once part of the Assyrian Empire.
The Assyrian Empire collapsed due to a combination of internal strife, overextension, and external pressures. The rise of the Medes and Chaldeans, who united their forces, led to the siege and eventual fall of Nineveh in 612 BCE. This marked the end of Assyrian dominance, as the once-powerful empire could not withstand the coordinated attacks from these emerging powers. Additionally, economic difficulties and civil unrest weakened Assyrian control, contributing to its downfall.

The Assyrian Church of the East is not in full communion with the Holy See and the Catholic Church, so the Assyrian Church of the East is not Catholic at all to begin with. However, some parishes that were once under the Assyrian Church of the East have since come into communion with the Chaldean Catholic Church and some of these Chaldean Catholic parishes kept Assyrian in their name, but they are still Chaldean Catholics. Chaldean Catholics are of the Chaldean Rite, which is an Eastern Rite in the Catholic Church, so they, Chaldean Catholics, are also Eastern Catholics. The only Assyrian Catholics are those Catholics that are of the Assyrian ethnic group.
