If you look closely on the sheetmetal cylinder head cover next to the spark plugs you will see them labeled. The number two cylinder is the furthest to the rear of the car on the right side. When you are sitting in the driver's seat your right hand is on the right side of the car.
When facing the engine compartment from the rear of the vehicle the number one cylinder is located on the right and furthest forward. The number 4 cylinder is located to the left and furthest rearward.

I really depends on what distributor you have on the engine. It could be a mechanical advance distributor or a vacuum advance distributor (stock). Google "the Somba" Volkswagen forum and all will be explained.

Open the engine cover on your car. The cylinder closest to the firewall on the right side is number 1, closest to you on the right is number 2, closest to the firewall on the left is number 3 and closest to you on the left is number 4.
You never replace a piston without replacing the cylinder too, as they're a matched set. The ones you want are for the 1600 cc engine.

That is an AS21 case. The number is the VW part number. It looks like it may be a 1600 CC 4 cylinder beetle style engine. Get the number of the engine off the generator pedestal mount (flat spot under the pedestal on the engine) and look it up with a beatle repair manual listing. Haynes publishes a good one for this type of data.
