It was the United Nations General Assembly that established the holiday in 1948. The date set for the holiday is October 24th, the same day that the United Nations Charter was adopted in 1945. United Nations Day is just one of the events that take place during United Nations Week which runs every year from October 20-24th. The 24th of October is United Nations Day. It is part of United Nations Week, from 20th to 26th of October. This day is the birthday of the United Nations! It is the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, the day on which the United Nations was formally established after a majority of its founding members ratified the treaty. The United Nations has adopted resolutions setting down that this day should be one on which "shall be devoted to making known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United nations and to gaining their support for" its work. In 1971 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a further resolution recommending that United Nations Day should be an international holiday and recommended it becoming a public holiday in the UN's member states. It is observed as such in Kosovo, which is administered by UN mission.
