Armistice Day was the day the Armistice was put in effect in World War I. It was agreed that fighting would cease on the 11th minute of the 11 th hour of the 11th month in 1918 (11:11 AM on Nov 11). That time was set to allow time for both sides to send word to their battle commanders. For many years after, every succeeding 11 Nov was observed in honor of the Armistice and of those who fought in the War, at least among the many countries who were on the winning side.
In many countries, the name of the observance was changed from Armiscite Day to Remembrance Day. In the United States, it became Veterans' Day after World War II produced a crop of verteans with little or no connection ti World War I.
In general, an Armistce is an agreement between waring sides to stop the fighting, but is not an agreement to make peace, nor is it necessarily an indication of victory by one side or surrender of another. In the case of World War I, however, it was the first step in the process of German and Austrian surrender to their opponents.
