Armistice day/Veterans Day
Australia Day is celebrated January 26th in Australia. It celebrates the 1788 European settlement in an area of current day Sydney.
Veterans Day is always observed on November 11th. This is because the cease-fire, or armistice, of World War I occurred at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 French time. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day for this reason. This date was not the end of WWI. That did not officially happen until June 28, 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Veterans Day is solely a US holiday. Many other nations have a similar holiday also on November 11th but with different names. In Australia, Canada and Great Britain it is called Remembrance Day. In Australia and Canada it is, again, always on November 11th. In Great Britain it is on the Sunday nearest to November 11th.
November 11th was selected as Veteran's Day. The holiday was originally called "Armistice Day", because on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice ended WWI.
In 1954 Dwight D. Eisenhower was president of the United States. He officially declared November 11th to be Veteran's Day.
