On Dec. 13, 1864, the Federals seized Fort McAllister and opened the communications with the Federal Fleet off shore. They then brought in seize guns from the fleet to force the city to surrender, but the Confederate commander Gen. Hardee, evacuated Savannah and retreated northward.
