In terms of dollars; Hurricane Katrina, which hit New Orleans, Louisiana cost more money (billions of dollars) than any other hurricane. It killed around 2,000 people. In terms of lives; the Galveston Texas Hurricane that hit on Sept. 8, 1900 killed between 6,000 and 12,000 people. Officially it killed 8,000 people. The Galveston Texas Hurricane killed more Americans than any other natural disaster. More Americans were killed on Sept. 8, 1900 than any other 24 day in the history of the USA.
1950-1952 hurricanes were named using the phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, etc.) Prior to that there was no naming system at all/ Storms were given numbers for purposes of record keeping. Some of the more devastating hurricanes were referred to by where or when they hit, such as the Galveston hurricane or the Labor Day hurricane.
