The Japanese attacked at 7:55 am on a Sunday which took the United States by surprise. Sunday was a favorable day of the week for the Japanese to attack because one: the battleship location was favorable for the Japanese; and two: the Japanese were aware that Americans including military personnel would be likely to sleep in on a Sunday. They did not bomb with large 4-engined bombers like the Allies did over Germany, years later. Since the bombs could only cause limited damage, they had to be very precise. For this reason, the Japanese sent many aircraft in the attack on the Naval base and Army air fields. There were very few civilians working on these bases. Since it was a Sunday morning, many civilians and military personel were home and off the base. The casualties among military personnel could have been higher if they attacked during the week. (OF course, the US Navy may have been better able to defend against the attack.)
