The current rubrics in place in 2013 according to the latest General Instruction on the Roman Missal do not allow anything ON the altar, flowers, candles, etc. are to be placed near the altar not on it. The only thing that should be on the altar at the start of Mass is the altar cloth.

∙ 15y agoThe only items that would be in a Catholic altar, other than the substance that the altar is made out of, would perhaps be an altar stone or relics of the saints. Sometimes altars are constructed around, on top of or actually are the tombs of martyrs, in which case the remains of an entire person may be in an altar.

At the Offertory, they spread a corporal in the center, on which they may put the gifts (the Gospels have come off when the Gospel is read). After Holy Communion, everything must be removed, and only the altar cloth remains. If the candles are not near the altar, they may be on it.Wiki User
