You are not required to have a degree however, it would greatly benefit one who has acquired a degree in restaurant management.

There are no credentials really. It does definitely help to have a business degree and good credit to convince a company to allow you open up a franchise with them, though.

Every single restaurant has ovens, stoves, refrigerators, and usually a walk-in cooler. Not to mention the tools for cooking, such as pots/pans, cutlery, timers, etc.
Depending on the context, it might refer to something not being profitable."It pays to (for example) open a restaurant" would mean that you can expect to get more money than you initially invested; while "It DOESN'T pay to open a restaurant" would mean the opposite.
