The Church did found America's first department store, ZCMI (Zion Cooperative Mercantile Institution), and owned it directly for nearly a century until it became part of Deseret Management/Zion Securities, a for-profit property management firm operated by the Church. ZCMI was sold to Meier and Frank department stores in 1999 and no longer exists.
