He had been elected on a ticket of no new slave-states, so the South was facing the prospect of being permanently outvoted in Congress. That is why they seceded, believing that the cotton revenues would be enough to live on. Only after January 1863 did it become an Abolitionist war, with the Emancipation Proclamation.
