A species' success or failure as a species depends on how well the species adapts. If a species cannot adapt, it dies.

Take humans. Physically, we're not that impressive. But we have adapted to survive in almost any terrestrial environment. And our intelligence has allowed us to go beyond even that.

Some plants and animals adapt to living conditions others are just natural to the enviorment. For instance if you take a Arctic Fox and put it in a forest and it will adapt and shed it's winter coat and change their coat to a brownish color. But if you a polar bear in lets say Africa, it just wouldn't survive.
