Well... a virus is "an infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host."(Google's dictoanry system) so if the organism has nucleic acid and uses a host cell to reproduce then it is technically a virus. An easy way to tell is look at the classes of viruses and see if the organism follows any of the seven classes (ex. HIV is a class VI virus, SARS is a class IV virus)
