1832 was the date of the first national nominating conventions. Both parties began on the same year.
The national convention system for nominating presidential candidates was developed by the Democratic Party in the early 19th century. This system was established to provide a more formal and inclusive process for selecting candidates, allowing party members from different states to come together and choose their nominee. The convention system has since been adopted by other political parties in the United States.
The president is nominated by the members of a political party, either by voting in primary election or at the national convention. In the case of primaries, the voters do not actually have to be official dues-paying party members-- they merely have to declare that they support the party whose ballot they ask for.

Various state legislatures nominated candidates but no party labels were attached to their endorsements. In 1828, the Adams supporters called themselves National Republicans. This party later developed into the Whig Party.
