Since the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) was founded 180 years ago, most Americans have had the same thoughts and feelings about the Church and it's members. Much of what people know about 'Mormons' was told to them by people who weren't Mormon... and much of it is twisted or untrue. This has caused many generations of Americans to reject Mormonism, without knowing much or anything about it.

Popular opinion and polls have said much about what most Americans think about Mormons. It seems that the popular opinion is that Mormons are strange brainwashed secrative liars who do a lot of community service but are out to anger and annoy everyone. They also show that most Americans know little or nothing about their beliefs. Many say they don't believe in The Bible, they don't believe in Jesus, they practice polygamy, they live in closed societies, they aren't willing to share their beliefs, their women are subservient, and they wear pioneer-style clothes. In fact, all of the above is completely untrue. There are even some who still believe in supersticious rumors about things like Mormons having horns and sacrificing women in their temples (of course, extremely untrue!)

You can learn more about what most Americans think about Mormons, who Mormons really are, or watch a short video dispelling some Mormon myths at the "Related Links" below.

How did the Mormons keep from having problems with Indians along the way?

The Mormon Pioneers and the Native Americans did have a few problems, but for the most part they got along pretty well. The Mormons tried hard to be friendly, share their supplies, and defend the Native Americans from other white men who would come to kidnap their women and children. Most of the time the Native Americans viewed the Mormons as a people kicked out of their homes and sympathized with them. The Mormons even sent missionaries among the Indian tribes and many converted. Both groups were pretty suspicious of each other in the early years, each feeling that the other was not trustworthy.
