In Roman mythology, Amulius was the brother of Numitor and son of Procas. He was the hostile uncle of Romulus and Remus' mother (Rhea Silvia/Rea Silvia/Ilia). His brother, Numitor, was the King of Alba Longa. Amulius overthrew him and took the throne.

King Proca of Alba Longa had 2 sons, Numitor and Amulius. Numitor inherited the throne, but was deposed by his younger brother, Amulius. Amulius as determined to wipe out the bloodline of his elder brother & had all his sons killed off. Numitor's daughter, Rhea Silva was spared if she became a Vestal Virgin who were not allowed to marry. Rhea Silva was 'ravished' by the god, Mars and gave birth to 2 sons Romulus and Remus. When King Amulius heard of this he had his niece put into chains in a dungeon, and had the twin boys put in a basket and taken to the river to die. The basket with the boys was discovered by a wolf, ... and you know the rest of the story.
