He became an orphan at an early age, becoming a farm laborer and shepherd until the age of 12. He then migrated to the city of Oaxaca to study and live with one of his older sisters. There, he also worked as domestic servant for Italian businessman Antonio Maza. Due to his superior intelligence, he became Maza's protegé, helping him to enter Law School at the age of 21. He finished school at the age of 28 and became a lawyer, then local judge, then judge of the Supreme Court and finally president of Mexico in 1851 (age 45).
As a side note, he married the adopted daughter of Antonio Maza, Margarita Maza.
