Benjamin Franklin was the first Postmaster-General of the United States and is the reason we have a US Postal System today.
Before that, you had to send your mail by a separate courier, rather than everyone sending it the same way through the same system.

"A republic, if you can keep it."
He meant 'keep' as in 'maintain': 'a republic, if you can maintain it'. Historically, republics don't have the best track record (I'm looking at you, Rome, Athens, and Florence). Benjamin Franklin meant that the republic that he had helped to created in the US was a gift, if the citizens of the US were able to make it work, and not let what happened to Rome happen to the US.

Benjamin Franklin is known for putting a lot of wise sayings into his "Poor Richard's Almanac." One of these is the saying, " Three may keep a secret if two of them are dead." This means that trusting others with a secret is a bad idea, because nobody can ever really keep it quiet.
According to the National Constitution Center, www.constitutioncenter.org, There is a story, often told, that upon exiting the Constitutional Convention Benjamin Franklin was approached by a group of citizens asking what sort of government the delegates had created. His answer was: "A republic, if you can keep it."
