Cabot explored for a Northwest passage to Asia, from which merchants could trade. They originally used the Silk Road, but there were bandits and thieves on the road, since at parts it was not near civilization. Also, they could only use camels to travel and carry the goods, but they did not carry nearly as much as a big merchant ship.
