∙ 11y agoPopular belief in the 21st century is that in 1492 people did not know that the earth is the sphere and thought it was flat. However, by Columbus's time everybody knew the earth was round, especially anybody who was to sail across an ocean! People had known that the earth was round for centuries.
Ask yourself, would King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella finance an extremely expensive mission if they had any belief that the earth was flat Dan that they would lose Columbus over the edge of the earth?
Columbus did not prove that the earth was round, hundreds of scientists (and a few vikings) already knew and have proven the earth was a sphere.
One of the most respected Scholars in the history of the world is Aristotle. He was studied a lot in the 1400's Europe. When he was alive in 330 BCE he believed the earth was a sphere. That is 1,822 years before Columbus sailed!

∙ 9y agoColumbus never had to discover that the Earth is a sphere. All the educated people in Europe already knew that, as did most observant sailors, who were able to see the curvature of the Earth when at sea.
