Constantine the Great ended the period of the tetrarchy (rule by four) during which the Roman Empire was ruled by four emperors and became the sole emperor after winning two civil wars. Although he ended the tetrarcy, he retained the administrative reforms introduced by the emperor Diocletian, which had doubled both the number of provinces of the empire and the size of the imperial bureaucracy. To deal with the problem of runaway inflation, which had been caused by a devaluation and shortage of gold and silver coins, the concentrated on minting large quantities of a new gold coin, the solidus. This was successful in stabilising the currency.

Constantine the Great did not need to save the Roman Empire. The empire had already been saved some 50 years earlier by Aurelian, who earned he title of Restitutor Orbis (Restorer of the World) for this.

Constantine the Great did not have to try to save the Roman Empire. It had already been saved by Aurelian (who was given the title Restitutor Orbis or Restorer of the World) some 40 years earlier. Constantine was focus on his bid for power. He went from being a co-emperor in the tetrarchy (rule by four) to being sole emperor by winning two civil wars.

Constantine tried to solve the problem of hyperinflation by temporarily ditching the silver coins and concentrating on minting large quantities of a new gold coin, the Solidus. This coin became the new standard of the Roman currency system. It did not solve the problem during Constantine's lifetime, but did so over the long run. The solidus was never debased over the rest of the history of Rome. Debasement (reductions in the precious metal content) of the gold and silver coins had been the problem which had led to hyperinflation.
