Cyrus McCormick received a patent on his 'perfected' mechanical reaper in 1834, but Cyrus himself was not sole originator of the idea. His lifetime of innovations were in large part influenced by prior work of his own father and a number of other contemporary inventors. McCormick's patents were also the subject of a number of patent infringement cases throughout the inventor's lifetime as he tried to claim rights to what he "patented first."
He received another patent on improvements to this machine in 1845, but it was not until the later 1840s that he began achieving more commercial success.

Cyrus McCormick and his father together invented the mechanical reaper, and Cyrus also developed new sales and marketing methods to sell it throughout the west.
The man who helped Cyrus McCormick invent the mechanical reaper was a slave named Jo Anderson. McCormick also acknowledged that his invention was based on work done by people before him.
The first McCormick Reaper was built and tested in Walnut Grove, VA. However, the majority of the Reapers were built at a factory in Chicago, IL.
Cyrus McCormick was actually the co-inventor of the reaper. The other inventor was Jo Anderson. Jo Anderson was a slave and if often not credited for co-inventing the reaper with Cryrus McCormick (a white man). As for WHEN they did this, sometime between 1800-1830.
