Hiawatha lived with his family in a village. Once his family had died, he left the village and lived in the forest because he felt lonely. That's when Deganawida (DEE-GON-UH-WEEDA), a Huron explorer, had found him and together they made peace between the tribes; Cayuga, Oneida, Seneca, Mohawk, and Onondaga, otherwise known as "COSMO", and made The Iroquois Confederacy.

An Onondaga man named Hiawatha became a strong supporter of the "Peace Maker."Hiawatha, a great orator, traveled to the other nations and submitted the plan for their consent. A Mohawk woman was the first person to approve the plan. Her actions symbolized the importance of women to the Iroquois political process. The Iroquois chiefs subsequently approved the plan.Only the Onondaga chief Thadodaho stood in opposition. Hiawatha explained his vision and finally won Thadodaho's approval--with one concession. Thadodaho said he would join only if he would be considered "first among equals." To show respect for the reluctant chief, meetings of the Iroquois Confederacy were always held in the principal Onondaga village, and the Onondaga chief served as the Council Leader.

Had Hiawatha lived to see the United States Constitution he no doubt would have recognized it and been proud to see that many of its components were borrowed from the Iroquois Constitution. According to various legends, Hiawatha was credited with helping to unify five warring Indian tribes in pre-colonial America. Those tribes were the Mohawks, the Oneidas, the Cayugas, the Senecas, and the Onondagas. Their constitution and democratic system of government was admired by the newcomers from England, particularly Benjamin Franklin, and this, along with its similarity, gave rise to the belief that the American constitution is based upon the constitution given to the Iroquois Confederacy by Deganawida and Hiawatha. In 2004 the US Government officially recognized the influence of the Iroquois Constitution on the US Constitution. Two links are provided below.
