In 1847, Kennedy led another expedition to follow the Barcoo River in south-western Queensland to see if it would lead to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Kennedy's main journey was his ill-fated expedition to Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland, for which he left in 1848. He landed at Rockingham Bay near Townsville on 24 May 1848 for the purpose of mapping the eastern coast of north Queensland.
