Elisha Otis is known for building the first modern passenger elevator which used his invention of a safety device which prevented the car from falling if the cables broke.
The elevator safety brake was first demonstrated at the Crystal Palace Exposition in New York in 1854. After ascending in his new elevator, Otis called for the elevator's cable to be cut with an axe. Instead of falling, the elevator platform held, secured by a brake using toothed guiderails in the elevator shaft and a spring-loaded bar that automatically caught in the toothed rail of the elevator car if the cable failed. Today, the Otis Elevator Company is the world's largest company in the manufacture and service of elevators, escalators, moving walks and people-moving equipment.
Elisha Otis was not the inventor of the elevator but the brakes used in modern elevators. While cleaning, he wondered how he could get the debris up into the upper levels of the factory, which lead him to create a safety elevator.
Elisha Otis invented a device that is a safety feature for elevators if the cables break. He started working on elevator designs in 1852, as requested by his employer Josiah Maize.
So elevator rides were smoother and less dangerous

I asked why did he make it not letting me answer!!!!
Elisha Graves Otis invented the elevator brakes (and thus the first safe elevator) in 1853. His invention made skyscrapers possible.

Here is what I could find on the subject: "Elisha Otis invented the "Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus." Elisha Otis didn't actually invent the elevator, he invented the brake used in modern elevators. His brakes made skyscrapers a practical reality. (above illustration - patent drawing of the Elisha Otis elevator) " What he did was invent a device that would stop the elevator if the main lifting cable broke.
