In February, 1847, he was made a colonel in the regular army and was promoted to brigadier general the next month. He led 2500 men into action in Mexico. He fought in the Battle of Contreras in August, 1847 and Churubusco. He marched into the Mexican capital when it fell in September 1847. He left the army in 1848.
